For many communities across Nigeria, vast stretches of waterways choked by water hyacinth have become an increasingly familiar and troubling sight. Beneath its glossy green leaves and attractive purple flowers lies one of the most destructive invasive aquatic plants threatening the sustainability of rivers, lagoons, creeks, and coastal ecosystems across the country.
Dr. Abiola Bashorun, Coordinator of the Nigeria Climate-Smart Agronomy Programme (NC-SAP) and Group CEO of ZL Global Alliance Nigeria Limited, argues that while water hyacinth remains a major environmental challenge, it also presents a significant opportunity to drive Nigeria’s Blue Economy, create jobs, and promote sustainable development.
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), originally native to South America, is now among the world’s most invasive aquatic plants. Its rapid growth enables it to form dense floating mats capable of covering entire waterways within weeks. In Nigeria, infestations stretch across major water bodies, including the Lagos Lagoon, Ogun River, the waterways of Ondo State, and the Niger Delta.
The consequences are far-reaching. Water hyacinth obstructs navigation routes, disrupts fishing activities, blocks drainage channels, reduces dissolved oxygen levels in water, and contributes to flooding. It also creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease vectors, posing serious public health concerns for waterfront communities. For local economies dependent on fisheries, transportation, and tourism, its proliferation represents a growing environmental and economic burden.
Yet water hyacinth should not be viewed solely as a nuisance. If properly managed, it can become a valuable resource capable of advancing Nigeria’s Blue Economy, Circular Economy, and Climate Action objectives.
Effective management begins with understanding the best time for intervention. Contrary to popular assumption, the peak rainy season is not the ideal period for large-scale removal. During this period, increased nutrient runoff accelerates plant growth, while flooding and strong currents disperse plant mats to new locations. As a result, areas cleared during the rainy season often become reinfested within a short period, leading to recurring costs and limited long-term impact.
The most effective period for large-scale harvesting is at the beginning of the dry season, typically between November and January. Water levels are lower, infestations are more concentrated, and harvesting operations can be carried out more efficiently and at lower cost. Follow-up maintenance activities can then be undertaken between February and April, while monitoring and targeted interventions continue throughout the rainy season.
However, removing water hyacinth is only part of the solution. The real opportunity lies in transforming the harvested biomass into products that create economic value and employment opportunities.
Around the world, water hyacinth is increasingly being converted into organic fertilizer, compost, biogas, biochar, animal-feed supplements, paper products, handicrafts, and biomass fuel. In Nigeria, these opportunities remain largely untapped.
Particularly promising is the production of biomass briquettes. Once harvested, dried, shredded, and compressed, water hyacinth can be transformed into an affordable and renewable fuel source for households, bakeries, fish-smoking enterprises, and small industries. Such initiatives can reduce dependence on firewood, ease pressure on forests, and contribute to cleaner energy access.
Similarly, compost and organic fertilizer derived from water hyacinth can support climate-smart agriculture while improving soil health. Biogas production offers another avenue for generating renewable energy, while handicraft and fibre-processing enterprises can create jobs for women and youth in waterfront communities.
This is where Nigeria’s Blue Economy agenda intersects with environmental stewardship. Rather than allocating scarce resources solely to recurring clearance exercises, government agencies, development partners, and private investors should adopt a more integrated approach that links water hyacinth management with resource recovery, value addition, and enterprise development.
Imagine a network of community-based harvesting teams supplying processing hubs that convert water hyacinth into fertilizer, bioenergy, briquettes, and fibre products. Such a model would not only keep waterways open and safe for navigation but also stimulate local economies, create jobs, and generate sustainable revenue streams.
The challenge before Nigeria is therefore not simply how to remove water hyacinth, but how to transform it from an environmental burden into an economic asset.
Nigeria’s waterways are too important to be left at the mercy of invasive aquatic weeds. With the right policies, strategic timing, and investment in value addition, water hyacinth can become a symbol of innovation rather than neglect—a practical example of how environmental challenges can be converted into opportunities for growth, resilience, and sustainable development.
The future of Nigeria’s Blue Economy may well depend on our ability to see value where others see waste.
