The Federal Government has announced that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of sweeping reforms aimed at promoting indigenous industries and strengthening the nation’s economy.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
According to the minister, the decision forms part of the government’s broader strategy to encourage local production and ensure public spending directly supports Nigerian businesses.
“It’s Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have the textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.
He explained that the new uniform will be produced locally, creating more opportunities for Nigeria’s textile manufacturers and artisans while boosting demand for indigenous fabrics.
The minister said the initiative is expected to strengthen the local textile industry, promote homegrown craftsmanship and keep government spending within the country’s economy.
Olawande also revealed that the Federal Government is overhauling the NYSC deployment process to ensure corps members are posted according to their professional qualifications and fields of study, a move aimed at improving productivity and aligning national service with workforce needs.
