Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has thrown his support behind new manager Enzo Maresca, describing the Italian as the “perfect” person to lead the Premier League champions following the departure of Pep Guardiola.
Maresca was appointed as Guardiola’s successor after the Spaniard ended his remarkable 10-year reign at the Etihad Stadium. The 46-year-old officially began his tenure during City’s pre-season tour, taking charge of his first match in a penalty shootout defeat to Inter Milan in Hong Kong.
Speaking to BBC Sport on Sunday, Gvardiol expressed confidence that Maresca has the qualities needed to build on Manchester City’s success despite the enormous challenge of replacing one of football’s greatest managers.
“The level is that high, and he has been chosen with reason as the manager,” Gvardiol said.
“I think he has quality, has some new ideas, and also we need to see what we are going to do with the style of play, the football we are going to play and the tactics.
“I think he is the perfect one, but of course, it takes time. It’s something totally new. It’s not easy to change the manager, so we will take time.”
The Croatia international stressed that the players also have an important responsibility in helping Maresca settle into his new role.
“It’s our job to help him as much as possible and also to listen and try to adapt as quickly as possible,” he added.
Gvardiol revealed that he has already spoken with Maresca, with their discussions centred on his recovery from injury and the role he played under Guardiola.
Reflecting on Guardiola’s departure, the defender said the timing felt right, noting that many within the squad sensed the legendary coach’s decade-long spell at Manchester City was approaching its conclusion.
Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season after leading City to multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups and international honours, bringing an end to one of the most successful managerial eras in the club’s history and ushering in a new chapter under Maresca.
