MTN, IMF Deepen Talks on Digital Economy, Growth Prospects in Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana

MTN Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have reinforced their commitment to Africa’s digital transformation, holding high-level discussions on the region’s economic outlook and the role of the digital economy in driving sustainable growth across key markets.

The meeting took place in South Africa, where MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Ralph Mupita, met with Dan Katz, who was visiting the country for engagements with government officials and private sector stakeholders.

Katz was accompanied by his Adviser, Matthew Jones; IMF Mission Chief for South Africa, Delia Velculescu; and IMF Senior Resident Representative and Head of the South Africa Office, Tidiane Kinda.

Discussions focused on the macroeconomic outlook across MTN’s major markets—South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana—and explored how digital technology can accelerate inclusive and sustainable economic growth across the continent.

Speaking after the meeting, Mupita said MTN’s pan-African footprint and leadership in digital and financial inclusion made the discussions particularly significant.

“Given MTN’s pan-African presence and position, as well as our role in advancing digital and financial inclusion, the discussion centred on the macroeconomic outlook across our key markets of South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana. In particular, we discussed the power of the digital economy to drive sustainable growth across the continent,” he said.

Mupita was joined at the meeting by MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, Nompilo Morafo; Treasury Executive, Thuto Shomang; and Chief of Staff, Jerry Varachia.

According to MTN, the engagement aligns with its purpose of “leading digital solutions for Africa,” the foundation of its Ambition 2030 strategy, which seeks to accelerate digital transformation while empowering individuals, households and businesses through innovative digital platforms.

Concluding the engagement, Mupita stressed that stronger international partnerships would be vital to unlocking Africa’s digital future.

“By working with partners from across the globe, we can speed up Africa’s digital transformation. We appreciate the opportunity to engage constructively with the IMF leadership and look forward to more engagements ahead,” he said.
