Newcastle United fought back from two goals down to rescue a hard-earned Premier League point against Bournemouth, with Jacob Ramsey scoring a late equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw at home.
Bournemouth made the brighter start and took the lead when Alex Scott’s deflected shot looped into the box, allowing Marcus Tavernier to get ahead of Amar Dedic at the back post and poke the ball underneath Lukas Hornicek.
Newcastle supporters expressed their frustration with the officials after the goal, believing there had been a foul in the build-up following a tussle between Adrien Truffert and Anthony Elanga.
The Cherries doubled their advantage when Justin Kluivert’s powerful long-range effort struck the post before rebounding off the back of Hornicek and falling to Scott.
Scott’s subsequent effort from a tight angle came off Malick Thiaw and went beyond the Newcastle goalkeeper, with the goal eventually recorded as an own goal.
Newcastle responded almost immediately. Harvey Barnes cut inside from the left before curling a superb right-footed effort into the top corner to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
An entertaining and fast-paced first half gave way to a more closely contested second period, with both sides battling for control.
Newcastle introduced Belgium forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo in the 63rd minute for his debut. The £51m signing from Lille, completed before the transfer window closed, was brought on as Newcastle looked for an attacking spark.
Bournemouth appeared to have done enough to hold on to their advantage, but Newcastle continued to push and eventually found their reward with two minutes of normal time remaining.
The equaliser came after Thiaw, with his back to goal inside the box, knocked the ball down into the path of Ramsey. The midfielder reacted quickly to fire a low, controlled finish into the corner and make it 2-2.
The late goal completed Newcastle’s fightback and ensured they avoided defeat after falling two goals behind, while Bournemouth were left to settle for a point after coming so close to securing victory.
