FG Launches Digital Postcodes, Urges Nigerians to Use Them

The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System and urged Nigerians to find and begin using their digital postcodes to make buildings, businesses and communities easier to locate.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch on Thursday, describing the system as a step towards improving location identification and connecting people and businesses to services and opportunities.

The system, operated through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), assigns a unique 11-character alphanumeric postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria.

The code provides a precise, GIS-enabled reference for identifying locations and is designed to make it easier for individuals, businesses and government agencies to locate specific buildings.

Tijani said the system could help businesses reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, enable families to provide accurate locations during emergencies and help government agencies deliver essential services to communities.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.

The minister said accurate postcodes would form part of the infrastructure needed to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.

“As we work towards (President Bola Tinubu’s) ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” Tijani said.

Tijani urged Nigerians to search for their postcodes through the official Digital Postcode website, postcode.gov.ng, and share them with family members, friends and businesses.

The system identifies locations through five levels — state, local government area, district, area and building — with each addressable building receiving its own unique code.

NIPOST said the digital postcode would support services including deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce by providing a standard digital reference for physical locations.

The postcode is assigned to the building rather than the individual, meaning it remains linked to the location even when occupants change.

The Federal Government expects the new system to strengthen Nigeria’s addressing infrastructure and make it easier for people to share their locations, businesses to reach customers and public agencies to deliver services across the country.
