Tekno: Intellectual Content No Longer Works in Nigeria

Afrobeats singer Austine Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno Miles, has defended the controversial “brain-rot content” trend, also known as the “Olodo Uprising,” arguing that Nigerians are more drawn to entertainment and goofy content than intellectual material.

Speaking in a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the ‘Pana’ crooner said intellectual content no longer works in Nigeria, stressing that comedy and entertainment have never been primarily about intelligence.

Tekno cited Nollywood comic legends Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, and John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, as examples of entertainers whose appeal was largely built around their goofy and comic characters.

According to him, audiences are often more interested in content that makes them laugh than material designed to demonstrate intelligence.

“Intellectual no dey work again. Wetin I go do with your intellect? I can watch Carter Efe for hours and just be laughing at him just being goofy because that’s interesting,” Tekno said.

He added, “Back in the day, when you dey watch Osuofia and Mr Ibu, wetin make you been like them? No be the mumu wey dem dey mumu?”

Tekno’s comments come amid growing debate over the rise of “brain-rot content” and the “Olodo Uprising” trend, with discussions continuing over whether contemporary entertainment is becoming more focused on unserious and deliberately goofy content than intellectual or educational material.
