France captain Kylian Mbappe has intensified the battle for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot after scoring his seventh goal of the tournament to send Les Bleus into the quarterfinals.
The Real Madrid forward calmly converted a second-half penalty in France’s hard-fought victory over Paraguay, delivering the decisive moment in a tense and physical encounter.
Mbappe now sits at the top of the Golden Boot standings with seven goals, edging Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who has also scored seven times but trails because Mbappe has registered two assists, while Messi is yet to provide one.
The race, however, remains wide open.
Messi will have another opportunity to draw level or move ahead when Argentina face Egypt in the Round of 16. The Inter Miami superstar reached his seventh goal in spectacular fashion during Argentina’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in the previous round.
Close behind the leading duo are England captain Harry Kane and Norway striker Erling Haaland, who have each scored five goals and remain firmly in contention for the tournament’s top individual scoring prize.
Kane will look to add to his tally when England face co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16, while Haaland will lead Norway’s attack against Brazil in another blockbuster knockout clash.
With the competition entering its decisive stage, the race for the Golden Boot is shaping up to be one of the tournament’s most captivating battles, with Mbappe and Messi leading the charge.
