Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has signed a three-year contract to become the new head coach of Real Madrid, marking a sensational return to the Santiago Bernabeu over a decade after his first spell at the club.

According to BBC Sport, Mourinho will not be officially unveiled until after Real Madrid’s presidential election scheduled for June 7, although both parties have already reached an agreement.

The 63-year-old departs Benfica after taking charge of the Portuguese club in September, guiding them to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga this season.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, where he enjoyed a successful spell, winning the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.

He replaces Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed in January following Xabi Alonso’s exit but failed to revive the club’s fortunes during a disappointing campaign.

Real Madrid ended the 2025-26 season without a trophy, while rivals Barcelona sealed the La Liga title after a 2-0 victory in El Clasico.
