The South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, over his remarks suggesting that the recent bandit attack in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State may have been staged to discredit Governor Seyi Makinde and President Bola Tinubu.

Describing the comments as “reckless, insensitive and politically dangerous,” the party said Fayose’s allegations were irresponsible, provocative and capable of worsening tensions at a time when Nigerians are grappling with security challenges.

In a statement titled ‘Fayose’s Hypocrisy Exposed’, signed by the South-West PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, the party maintained that it was inappropriate for a former governor to turn a serious security matter into political speculation, especially when lives have been lost and many families remain affected.

Fayose had reportedly suggested during a television interview that the Oyo State Government could have been connected to the abductions as part of a political agenda aimed at embarrassing the President.

Rejecting the allegation, the South-West PDP urged Nigerians not to politicise insecurity but to support ongoing efforts by security agencies and government authorities to tackle the menace.

The party also expressed confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde’s handling of the situation, commending his commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Oyo State.

Furthermore, the PDP accused Fayose of inconsistency, alleging that he has remained largely silent on similar security incidents in Ekiti State while being outspoken on developments in Oyo. It also questioned his political motives, claiming some of his actions and public positions appear contradictory.

According to the party, Fayose’s remarks reflected selective outrage and seemed driven more by political considerations than genuine concern for victims of insecurity.

The South-West PDP called on respected party leader, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, to intervene and counsel Fayose in the interest of unity and stability within the party.

The party added that political leaders should prioritise strengthening institutions, supporting security efforts and promoting national cohesion rather than making statements capable of inflaming public tensions.
