Jason Arday, a former professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge, has been found dead in London at the age of 41.
Arday was found unresponsive at an address in Battersea on Friday afternoon and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called by the London Ambulance Service at about 3:12pm.
A police spokesperson said Arday’s next of kin had been informed and were receiving support from officers.
“At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious. The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit. A file will be prepared for the coroner,” the spokesperson said.
Arday became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor during his academic career at the university, where he served as a professor of sociology of education.
He resigned from Cambridge on August 5 following allegations of plagiarism. The university had launched an investigation into his appointment and tenure, with the review also expected to examine its hiring process for senior academic positions.
Arday resigned hours after the university announced the investigation, citing what he described as an “unrelenting level of public scrutiny”.
His death comes days after his resignation from the university, although police said it is not currently being treated as suspicious.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, and a report will be prepared for the coroner, who will determine the cause and circumstances of his death.
