Rivers United team manager, Festus Austine, has admitted that a series of setbacks hampered the club’s performance in the group stage of the CAF Champions League, leading to their disappointing campaign.
The Pride of Rivers managed to secure just one point from five matches in the group phase.
Austine noted that the team must strengthen its squad by recruiting higher-quality players to effectively compete with the top sides on the continent.
“In the group stage of the CAF Champions League, we faced some setbacks that affected our output on the continent,” Austine stated on his social media handle.
“We gained a lot of experience from what happened, but we just have to improve the quality of players we recruit at this level.
He added that, given the league’s financial challenges, most top-quality players leave for opportunities abroad where they can earn better pay.
