The Imo State chapter of the Action Peoples’ Party (APP) has raised the alarm over the alleged invasion of its secretariat in Owerri by suspected political thugs, describing the incident as a threat to democracy, the rule of law and peaceful political participation in the state.
The party said the incident occurred at about 6:10 a.m. on Sunday when a group of heavily armed individuals allegedly scaled the perimeter fence of its secretariat and forcefully gained access to the premises.
According to the APP, eyewitnesses claimed the group was led by an aide to the Imo State governor alongside some associates. The party alleged that the suspects vandalised its property, including destroying its billboard and other campaign materials mounted within the secretariat.
The allegations were contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Steve Nnamdi, and made available to journalists in Owerri.
“The Action Peoples’ Party views this alleged act as a disturbing development capable of undermining the peaceful political atmosphere currently existing in the state,” the statement said.
The APP also expressed concern over what it described as a pattern of politically motivated intimidation, citing similar incidents reportedly recorded in Umuoyima, Owerri Municipal Council, and Arondizuogu in Ideato North Local Government Area.
The party called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant security agencies to immediately launch a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident.
It insisted that anyone found culpable, regardless of status or political affiliation, should be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The APP stressed that every registered political party has a constitutional right to carry out its lawful activities without fear, intimidation, harassment or unlawful interference.
The party also appealed to Governor Hope Uzodinma and security agencies to intervene by ensuring that all political actors and government officials conduct themselves responsibly.
“It is imperative that every political party is provided with a level playing field to freely engage in legitimate political activities as preparations for future elections continue across the state,” the statement added.
The APP urged its members, supporters and the general public to remain calm, law-abiding and avoid any form of retaliation while allowing security agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
