The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, has called for greater security education in schools as a key strategy to curb school attacks, violent extremism, kidnapping, abduction and other security threats.
The Lagos State Commandant of the Corps, Mr Adedotun Keshinro, made the call during the 7th Edition of the NSCDC Lagos Public Relations Clinic held in Lagos. The event was themed, “Security and Safety of Schools in Lagos: The Roles of Government, NSCDC and Stakeholders.”
Represented by Deputy Commandant of Corps (DCC) Jimoh Sulaiman, Keshinro urged government agencies, school authorities, security organisations, parents and other stakeholders to embrace collective responsibility, vigilance and professionalism to prevent attacks on schools and protect schoolchildren across the country.
His remarks were contained in a statement signed by the NSCDC Lagos State Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Oluwaseun Bolurin.
The event featured presentations by Professor Waziri Adisa and Dr Cynthia Gregg, with Comrade Akintoye Hassan serving as the lead discussant.
Professor Adisa advocated a whole-of-society approach to improving school security, stressing that safe schools are essential for uninterrupted learning, public confidence, social stability and national development.
Dr Cynthia Gregg called for a safer learning environment for schoolchildren across Lagos to sustain educational growth and development. She commended the proactive efforts of the NSCDC Lagos State Command in safeguarding schools and called for stronger inter-agency collaboration, continuous training and enhanced capacity building for security personnel.
Comrade Akintoye Hassan also advocated a renewed approach to school security, praising the innovative initiatives of the NSCDC Lagos State Command and urging greater collaboration among stakeholders to end attacks on schools, educational facilities, students and host communities.
The event concluded with a comprehensive summary by the moderator, Mr Dipo Kehinde, following a technical panel session featuring Dr Cynthia Gregg, SRC Elizabeth Jayeola, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos Sector Command; SC Ada Agada of the NSCDC Special Female Squad, Lagos State Command; and Miss Kolurejo Best, a Basic Six pupil of Anuoluwapo Primary School.
Since its inauguration in June 2024, the NSCDC Lagos Public Relations Clinic has continued to educate and strengthen the capacity of NSCDC personnel, other security agencies and members of the public on the Corps’ mandate, emerging security challenges, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the Code of Conduct, policy directives and relevant laws.
