Nigeria Connects National Power Grid to West African Network

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), in collaboration with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) Information and Coordination Centre, has successfully conducted a major alignment test integrating Nigeria’s electricity grid with the wider West African power network.

This is according to a statement signed by the Chairman of NISO’s Board of Directors, Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Bello Mohammed, on Sunday.

NISO said the test was conducted on Saturday, November 8, 2025, between 05:04 a.m. and 09:04 a.m.

It explained that the exercise involved synchronizing the Nigerian grid, covering Niger Republic as well as parts of Benin and Togo at a unified operating frequency with the rest of the West African regional grid.

The successful operation marks a major milestone in regional electricity market integration efforts under the West African Power Pool.

The move also signals progress towards establishing a single, interconnected power pool that enables efficient energy sharing across West African nations.

NISO stated that the achievement underscores Nigeria’s technical competence in managing complex, large-scale grid operations in accordance with international standards. The organization added that the breakthrough also consolidates Nigeria’s strategic leadership role in promoting economic cooperation and energy security across the region.

The successful integration marks a historic milestone in regional energy cooperation, showcasing NISO’s technical expertise in managing complex grid operations according to international standards. It underscores Nigeria’s readiness to lead in regional energy initiatives and reinforces the country’s pivotal role in driving economic growth through collaborative power development.
