Mohamed Salah inspired Egypt to a landmark 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand, securing the Pharaohs’ first-ever World Cup win after a 92-year wait and putting them on the brink of a historic place in the knockout stage.
The victory marked a major milestone for Egypt, whose first World Cup appearance came in 1934. The result also leaves them in a strong position to qualify from the group stage for the first time in their history.
New Zealand struck first in the 15th minute when Finn Surman rose highest to head home Tim Payne’s well-delivered corner.
But Egypt responded brilliantly after the break following tactical adjustments by manager Hossam Hassan.
Mostafa Zico, named after the legendary Brazilian football icon, restored parity in the 58th minute when he headed in Mohamed Hany’s cross.
Salah then took centre stage, combining neatly with Zico before calmly finding the bottom corner to put Egypt ahead.
The former Liverpool star capped a memorable performance by delivering a pinpoint corner that substitute Trezeguet headed home in the 82nd minute to seal the win.
Egypt’s first victory in their fourth World Cup campaign sends them to the top of Group G, with a win against Iran on Saturday set to guarantee first place.
For New Zealand, the wait for a maiden World Cup victory continues. They must defeat Belgium in their next match to keep their hopes of progression alive.
