Sanwo-Olu Orders Massive Waste Clearance as Lagos Moves to Tackle Growing Refuse Challenge

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across Lagos State following growing concerns over the accumulation of refuse in some parts of the metropolis.

The Lagos State Government acknowledged residents’ frustrations over the situation and assured Lagosians that efforts are underway to restore cleanliness and environmental standards across affected communities.

According to the government, Governor Sanwo-Olu has mobilised relevant agencies and waste management service providers to work round the clock in clearing refuse backlogs and restoring normal waste collection operations.

Additional resources have been deployed to support ongoing evacuation efforts, while strategic interventions are being implemented to strengthen operational efficiency and improve waste collection and disposal across the state.

The governor has also directed the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and other relevant agencies to intensify their activities to address the challenge.

The government noted that Lagos, as one of Africa’s fastest-growing megacities, generates about 13,000 tons of waste daily, making waste management a complex task. While occasional operational disruptions may occur, authorities stressed that the state possesses the capacity and determination to resolve the situation promptly.

Residents were reassured that the current challenge is temporary, with significant progress already recorded in several locations. More visible improvements are expected across the state in the coming days.

The administration highlighted its sustained investments in environmental sustainability, waste management infrastructure, and urban renewal programmes, emphasizing that efforts to build a cleaner, safer, and more livable Lagos remain a top priority.

The government appealed to residents, community leaders, market associations, businesses, and other stakeholders to support sanitation initiatives by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding practices that obstruct drainage systems, roads, and designated waste collection points.

Reaffirming its commitment to public health and environmental protection, the Lagos State Government assured residents that a comprehensive response is underway to clear the current waste buildup and strengthen the long-term resilience of the state’s waste management system.

According to the government, a cleaner Lagos remains not just an aspiration but a commitment that will continue to be delivered for the benefit of all residents.
