President Bola Tinubu on Thursday evening convened a high-level security meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, bringing together the nation’s military commanders, intelligence chiefs and top security advisers for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security situation.
The closed-door meeting, which lasted more than two hours, focused on developments across various theatres of operation and the country’s ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity. The State House announced the meeting through photographs released on Thursday evening.
Among those in attendance were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence; the Chief of Defence Staff; the Chief of Army Staff; the Chief of Defence Intelligence; the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Ajayi; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed; the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunde Disu; and the President’s Special Adviser on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka Famadewa (retd.), alongside other senior security officials.
The meeting came two days after troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, supported by the Air Component of the Joint Task Force (North West), disrupted what the military described as a major planned terrorist offensive in Zamfara and Katsina states.
During the July 7 operation, three Nigerian Air Force aircraft tracked a convoy of about 300 heavily armed terrorists on motorcycles moving from the Sunke-Kumbo axis towards Gummi and carried out precision airstrikes on the formation. In a separate operation, troops also neutralised Alhaji Tukur, a notorious bandit commander and younger brother of wanted kingpin Alhaji Shehu Bagiwaye, in Dogon Kade.
In the North-East, troops of Operation Hadin Kai also repelled a fresh assault on the Mairari military base on July 1, amid renewed attacks on military formations. Security analysts have linked the attacks to efforts by ISWAP to weaken military operations, with at least 13 attacks on military bases recorded in 2026, mostly in Borno State.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency had not issued an official statement on the outcome of the meeting.
At a similar security briefing held in March, the Defence Minister told State House correspondents that the armed forces remained on top of the situation, insisting that terrorists and bandits were suffering heavy casualties and expressing confidence that security forces would ultimately prevail.
