Chelsea F.C. have opened club-to-club talks with Rayo Vallecano over the signing of left-back Pep Chavarria.
The Premier League side are looking to strengthen their left side following the departure of Marc Cucurella, who reportedly completed a £52 million move to Real Madrid C.F.>, leaving new manager Xabi Alonso with fewer options in defence.
According to reports, Chelsea have begun negotiations with Rayo Vallecano over a possible deal for the 28-year-old, who still has four years remaining on his contract.
The report added that Jorrel Hato, who joined Chelsea from AFC Ajax last summer, is expected to play a bigger role after impressing club officials with his performances in the second half of his debut campaign.
If the move is completed, Chavarria would provide additional competition at left-back and wing-back.
The Spanish defender made 44 appearances in all competitions for Rayo Vallecano last season, helping the club reach the Conference League final and finish eighth in La Liga.
Chelsea have already agreed a deal for Marco Palestra from Atalanta BC, with official confirmation still pending. Chavarria is expected to become the second signing under Xabi Alonso, excluding deals completed before his appointment.
