The Kaduna State chapter of the National Onions Producers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) has forecast a slight increase in onion prices this yuletide, citing rising demand. Mr. Amir Adamu, NOPPMAN’s Kaduna State Secretary, made the prediction in an interview with our reporter on Sunday in Lagos.
He explained that the rising demand for onions, coupled with some farms yet to be harvested, is driving prices up as the yuletide approaches. “Onion prices vary across states; here in Kaduna, the older onions harvested around July and August sell for about N50,000 to N60,000 per bag, while the fresh onions from Sokoto go for approximately N80,000 to N100,000 per bag,” he said.
“This is because of the high demand of the Sokoto specie of the onion and its current availability,” Adamu said.
He, however, said there was a possibility of an increase in price of the produce, because bother states were yet to harvest onions in their farms.
“It is expensive up north because it is currently on high demand. The price of onions will gradually drop from next year January when the onions from Kebbi state is ready for harvest.
“The possibility of the price of onions dropping is very negligible.
“Before now an old bag of onions sold between N30,000 to N40,000 up north, but it is quite expensive this year due to the demand rate.
“As the Christmas celebration approaches the price may further increase due to the demand of the produce.
“We can only expect a respite in the price of onions in early January to March 2026,” he said.
Veritas Nexus reports that the price of a bag of onions has risen to between ₦100,000 and ₦130,000, up from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000 just a few months ago.
