Health Agency Urges Calm Over Surge in Respiratory Infections in Kano

The Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KNCDC) has confirmed a surge in respiratory infection cases across Kano State, urging residents not to panic as health authorities monitor the situation.

In a public health advisory issued on Thursday, the agency said it has recorded an increase in cases of upper respiratory tract infections, with symptoms including cough, sore throat, fever and nasal congestion reported in several communities.

The Director-General of KNCDC, Prof. Muhammad Abbas, clarified that the rise in cases does not signal the emergence of any new COVID-19 variant in the state.

According to him, most of the reported cases are mild and usually resolve within seven to 10 days without serious complications.

“We have observed a rise in upper respiratory tract infections across the state, but there are currently no confirmed cases of any COVID-19 variant in Kano. Residents should remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic,” the statement read.

The agency, however, advised residents to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen, particularly in cases involving high fever lasting more than three days, chest pain or difficulty in breathing.

It added that children under five, elderly persons, pregnant women and individuals with underlying health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and HIV are more vulnerable to complications.

KNCDC urged the public to observe preventive measures including regular hand washing, proper cough etiquette, adequate ventilation of indoor spaces and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.

The agency also advised residents to ensure their routine immunisations are up to date as part of broader efforts to curb the spread of infections.
