Threads Surges Past 500 Million Users as Meta Expands Community Experience Worldwide

Meta has announced that its social media platform, Threads, has surpassed 500 million monthly active users, a major milestone that highlights the platform’s rapid growth and rising influence in the global social media space.

The company revealed the achievement on Tuesday while unveiling a range of new features aimed at deepening user engagement and making communities on the platform more interactive, accessible and rewarding.

According to Meta, much of Threads’ growth has been fueled by vibrant communities formed around shared interests, including sports, books, parenting, music and lifestyle discussions.

The company said the latest milestone reflects the increasing demand for online spaces where people can connect through meaningful conversations and common interests.

“Today we’re announcing that Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users, a milestone that reflects people’s desire for a public space built around conversation,” Meta said in a statement.

Meta noted that Communities have become one of the fastest-growing features on Threads since their introduction last year, prompting the company to invest further in expanding and improving the experience.

As part of the latest update, the Communities feature is officially moving out of beta testing, accompanied by several enhancements designed to make participation easier and more engaging.

A key addition is the new Communities Hub, which will be integrated into the platform’s main navigation menu, allowing users to discover, access and switch between communities more seamlessly.

Communities will also receive unique visual icons, helping users identify and navigate them more easily across the platform.

Meta is also introducing a Community Progress feature, enabling users to see when a discussion topic is close to becoming an official community and showing how they can contribute to helping it reach that milestone.

To encourage active participation, the company is expanding its Community Champion programme, which recognises users who consistently drive quality conversations and meaningful engagement within communities.

In a move to strengthen local connections, Meta announced the rollout of Local Communities, beginning with native-language community tags in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

The company further disclosed plans to expand Live Chats to more communities in the coming weeks. New features will include co-hosting capabilities and tools that allow users to quote highlights from live discussions directly to their feeds.

With more than 500 million monthly active users and a growing focus on community-driven engagement, Threads continues to position itself as one of the fastest-rising social platforms, offering users new ways to connect, share ideas and build meaningful online communities.
