The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has ordered traditional worshippers across Edo South Senatorial District to launch a coordinated spiritual campaign against banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes threatening peace and security in the country.
The revered monarch gave the directive during a meeting with traditionalists, including native doctors, priests and priestesses, at the Benin Royal Palace in Benin City.
According to Oba Ewuare II, the initiative was inspired by divine instruction from God Almighty and the royal ancestors in response to growing security challenges and acts of criminality affecting communities across the nation.
He said the traditional institution has a responsibility to complement the efforts of government and security agencies in the fight against insecurity and violent crime.
As part of the directive, the monarch ordered the commencement of a week-long spiritual exercise dedicated to seeking divine intervention for peace, safety and stability across Edo State and Nigeria.
The spiritual programme, he disclosed, will culminate in a gathering at the Oba’s Palace on July 2, 2026, where traditionalists will assemble to pronounce curses against bandits, kidnappers, violent criminals and those who support or sponsor their activities.
“This message is from our ancestors. It is important that Edo people at home and in the diaspora hear it,” the monarch said.
Oba Ewuare II expressed confidence that divine intervention and ancestral powers would frustrate the plans of criminal elements and restore peace to affected communities.
“They are aware that God Almighty and our ancestors will not allow their evil works to prevail against Edo State. The past Obas of Benin will not allow their wishes to succeed. They have caused enough confusion, and it is time for them to abandon their activities,” he stated.
The monarch reaffirmed his commitment to the safety and well-being of the people, stressing that both spiritual and conventional measures must work together to confront the growing threat of banditry and violent crime.
The move comes amid increasing concerns over insecurity in parts of the country, with traditional institutions increasingly joining calls for collective action to safeguard lives and property.
