The Federal Government has reaffirmed that it has no plans to increase taxes, stressing that its priority is to expand the number of taxpayers rather than raise tax rates.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, made the clarification while receiving a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) in Abuja.
Oyedele commended the institute for introducing a National Tax Awareness Day and supporting the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reforms.
He urged the institute to intensify public enlightenment efforts, noting that many Nigerians still perceive taxation as a means for the government to take money from citizens.
According to the minister, the government’s focus is on broadening the tax base by ensuring that all eligible taxpayers meet their obligations, rather than imposing higher taxes.
“We are still not generating enough revenue from taxes. It is not about increasing taxes but making sure that those who are supposed to pay tax do so. We want to promote fairness in tax administration,” Oyedele said.
