The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has raised concern over the emergence of cannabis cultivation in Adamawa State, revealing that criminals are now growing the banned substance in parts of the state.
Speaking during the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Yola, the Adamawa State Commander of the NDLEA, Aliyu Abubakar, disclosed that operatives uncovered and destroyed three cannabis farms located in Mayo Belwa, Mubi South and Mubi North local government areas.
According to him, the agency destroyed a one-and-a-half-hectare cannabis farm in Mayo Belwa and one-hectare farms each in Mubi South and Mubi North.
Abubakar also highlighted the command’s achievements over the past year, including the arrest of 583 suspected drug offenders and the conviction of 270 of them.
He added that the command seized about five tonnes of illicit substances, including tramadol, diazepam, codeine and methamphetamine, popularly known as “ice.”
The NDLEA commander and guest speaker, Dr. Stephen John, linked drug abuse to rising criminal activities, stressing that many violent crimes are committed under the influence of drugs.
They urged authorities to strengthen enforcement efforts, warning that criminal groups are becoming more sophisticated in their methods and weaponry.
