The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is intensifying, with Harry Kane, Ousmane Dembélé and Lamine Yamal emerging among the leading contenders for football’s most prestigious individual award.
Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup has added another dimension to the contest, particularly for Dembélé and other PSG stars following the club’s successful European campaign.
PSG took the lead through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before Aston Villa’s Brian Madjo restored parity shortly before half-time. Desire Doué then struck in the second half to secure victory for the French champions and another European trophy.
The triumph gave PSG back-to-back Super Cup titles and could further strengthen the Ballon d’Or credentials of some of their leading players.
The race, however, remains closely contested, with performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup expected to have a major influence on the final voting.

Kane currently has one of the strongest statistical cases for the award. The Bayern Munich striker scored 73 goals during the season, helping the German giants secure a domestic double and reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The reigning Ballon d’Or winner remains firmly in contention after another impressive campaign. Dembélé scored six goals at the World Cup, including a hat-trick against Norway, while PSG’s dominance in domestic and European football has strengthened his case.
3. Lamine Yamal — Spain/Barcelona
Yamal played a key role in Barcelona’s success, helping the club win LaLiga and the Supercopa de España. Spain’s strong showing at the World Cup has also boosted his candidacy, despite his relatively quieter individual performance at the tournament.
4. Rodri — Spain/Manchester City
The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner enhanced his reputation by claiming the World Cup Golden Ball after featuring in all eight of Spain’s matches. He also helped Manchester City win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, although the club missed out on the Premier League and Champions League titles.
5. Kylian Mbappé — France/Real Madrid
Mbappé enjoyed an outstanding World Cup campaign, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists as France finished fourth. He also became the first player to win the Golden Boot in LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup in the same calendar year.
However, his lack of major team trophies has weakened his overall claim, leaving the 2026 Ballon d’Or race wide open as the leading contenders continue to compete for individual and team honours.
