The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has swept the Anambra State local government elections, winning all 21 chairmanship seats and every councillorship position across the state.
The results, formally declared on Sunday by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), confirmed APGA’s dominance in the election held across the state on Saturday.
Announcing the results at the commission’s headquarters in Awka, the state capital, ANSIEC Chairperson, Genevieve Osakwe, said APGA candidates emerged victorious in all 21 local government areas.
Osakwe said the commission carefully collated and reviewed the results to ensure accuracy before formally declaring the winners.
“All the candidates of APGA have been officially declared winners as councillors and executive council chairmen-elects,” she said.
According to her, the election was conducted across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas, with voting taking place at polling units throughout the state.
She described the exercise as peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible, in line with Anambra State electoral laws and guidelines.
Osakwe also commended residents for participating in the election and praised security agencies for maintaining peace and order during the exercise.
APGA was the only political party to field candidates in 20 of the 21 local government areas. The Young Progressives Party (YPP) presented candidates only in Anambra East Local Government Area, while other opposition parties did not participate in the election.
No opposition party, candidate or agent was present at the ANSIEC headquarters during the formal declaration of the results.
Osakwe announced the names and scores of the APGA candidates individually before declaring them winners after they secured the highest number of votes.
She explained that the results had already been announced at the various polling units on Saturday, while Sunday’s exercise was to formally confirm the outcome.
“We carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes. All the scores and the winners were announced at the polling units yesterday. We are here today to affirm the results as recorded,” she said.
The result gives APGA control of all 21 local government councils in Anambra State, following an election in which the party faced limited opposition.
