Kylian Mbappe was denied a chance to retake his late penalty after VAR reviewed a possible encroachment during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Real Betis on Friday night.
Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe missed a 93rd-minute penalty that could have rescued a point for his side, as Los Blancos suffered their first LaLiga defeat of the season against Real Betis at La Cartuja.
Referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez awarded the penalty after a foul on Vinicius Junior, giving Mbappe the opportunity to level the game late in the match.
However, the France captain’s effort was saved by Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles. VAR subsequently reviewed the incident after Betis defender Marc Bartra appeared to have encroached into the penalty area before the ball was struck.
Replays confirmed that Bartra was the first player to breach the perimeter of the box. He also became involved immediately after the save, ultimately clearing the ball for a corner following Valles’ initial stop.
Despite the apparent encroachment, Mbappe was not given another opportunity to take the penalty.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the decisive factor in the VAR review was a technicality concerning the exact positioning of Bartra’s feet at the moment Mbappe struck the ball.
The decision stood, leaving Real Madrid without an equaliser and handing them their first LaLiga defeat of the season in a dramatic finish.
