Nigeria Calls for UN Sanctions to Curb Nuclear Weapons Proliferation

Nigeria has called on the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions and strengthen international measures to curb the proliferation of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

President Bola Tinubu’s position was conveyed by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, at a high-level meeting in New York marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Tinubu said Nigeria’s security does not depend on nuclear weapons and called for stronger regulation and international action to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

He also stressed the need for countries to respect the UN Charter and strengthen collective efforts towards nuclear disarmament.

The President commended African leaders for their efforts in keeping the continent free of nuclear weapons testing and production.

“We must thank African leaders for their efforts in ensuring that the continent remains free of weapons testing and the production of weapons of mass destruction,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu noted that more than 12,000 nuclear weapons remain in global arsenals, stressing the need for the international community to renew its commitment to peace, non-proliferation and total disarmament.

The UN says more than 12,000 nuclear weapons remain worldwide, making nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation a continuing priority for the international community.
