The Edo State Government has denied reports that it banned Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, from entering or performing in the state, describing the purported directive as the handiwork of an impostor and an enemy of the state.
The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said in a statement on Thursday that Davido is welcome to Edo State like every other Nigerian, adding that the government remains willing to collaborate with the singer if he decides to perform in the state.
Afegbua said the state government completely dissociates itself from what he described as “spiteful behaviour,” stressing that Edo remains home to all Nigerians, irrespective of their beliefs, political persuasion, affiliations or legal associations.
“Should Davido intend to perform in Edo State in future, the state will be willing to collaborate and partner with him,” he said.
The commissioner described Davido as one of Edo’s illustrious sons, noting that the singer’s mother hails from the state.
He said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration maintains a balanced approach in dealing with the state’s diverse population and is pleased to associate with the globally acclaimed artiste.
“Should he wish to visit Edo State, we would happily host and fete him,” Afegbua said.
On the controversy surrounding Davido and recent political developments in Osun State following last week’s election, the commissioner said whatever transpired was purely political and should not be interpreted as a personal dispute.
Afegbua described Davido as a young Nigerian who has continued to serve as a global ambassador for the country through his music while building bridges across socio-political divides.
“As a government, we are pleased with his conduct, commitment and calculated conquest in the music industry. Indeed, we look forward to him being awarded a Grammy title,” he added.
The Edo State Government urged members of the public to disregard any purported directive suggesting that Davido had been banned from entering or performing in the state, reaffirming its commitment to making Edo welcoming to all.
