Every Watt Counts: Smarter Energy Use Can Prevent Blackouts and Protect the Environment

 

As rising temperatures, intense rainfall and increasingly unpredictable weather continue to test electricity infrastructure, the need for responsible energy use has never been greater. Across homes, offices, businesses and industries, every unit of electricity saved helps reduce pressure on the power grid, improves energy security and supports environmental sustainability.

Dr. Abiola Bashorun, Coordinator of the Climate-Smart Sustainability Programme, says energy conservation is no longer just about lowering electricity bills—it has become an essential climate action strategy. According to her, efficient energy use strengthens electricity systems during extreme weather, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, conserves natural resources and supports the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

Periods of extreme heat typically trigger a surge in electricity demand as cooling systems operate for longer hours. At the same time, prolonged cloudy weather and flooding can reduce solar energy generation, damage electricity infrastructure and interrupt power supply. Whether households and organisations rely on the national grid, solar installations, generators or hybrid energy systems, prudent energy management can help maintain reliable power while reducing operating costs.

For households, simple actions can make a significant difference. Unplugging chargers and electronic devices when they are not in use, switching off lights and appliances in empty rooms, installing energy-efficient LED bulbs and setting air conditioners between 24°C and 26°C can reduce unnecessary electricity consumption. Limiting the use of high-power appliances during peak demand periods, reducing the frequency of opening refrigerators and making greater use of natural light and ventilation also improve energy efficiency.

Businesses and offices are equally encouraged to adopt energy-saving practices. Computers, printers, photocopiers and lighting should be switched off after working hours, while energy-saving or sleep modes should be enabled on office equipment. Decorative lighting should be minimised during the day, air-conditioning systems maintained regularly and staff encouraged to power down equipment before leaving their workstations. Organisations can further improve efficiency by installing motion sensors, smart energy management systems and conducting routine energy audits.

Industrial and commercial facilities also have a critical role to play. Optimising production schedules to reduce electricity demand during peak periods, maintaining electrical equipment for maximum efficiency, integrating renewable energy systems with battery storage and implementing emergency energy management plans can significantly strengthen operational resilience during extreme weather events.

Electrical safety must remain a priority, particularly during flooding. Residents should avoid fallen power lines and electrical equipment in flooded areas, disconnect appliances where flooding is expected and safe to do so, promptly report damaged electricity infrastructure to distribution companies and strictly follow safety advisories issued by emergency management authorities.

Energy experts emphasise that energy efficiency is the foundation of a sustainable energy future. Every kilowatt-hour saved eases pressure on the national grid, preserves stored renewable energy, reduces dependence on fuel-powered generators, improves air quality and strengthens climate resilience.

By embracing responsible energy practices in homes, workplaces, industries and public institutions, communities can help prevent blackouts, protect critical infrastructure and contribute to a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment.
