Lionel Messi has taken sole control of the race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after inspiring Argentina to a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in Tuesday night’s Round of 16 clash.
The Argentina captain scored the equaliser as the defending champions overturned a two-goal deficit to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Egypt looked set for a famous upset after Yasser Ibrahim powered home a towering header before Mostafa Zico doubled the Pharaohs’ advantage.
However, Argentina produced a remarkable fightback. Cristian Romero pulled one back before Messi levelled the score. Enzo Fernandez then completed the comeback with the decisive goal to seal a thrilling victory.
Messi also had the opportunity to extend his tally further but saw his penalty brilliantly saved.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner now leads the tournament’s Golden Boot standings with eight goals, moving one clear of France’s Kylian Mbappe and England captain Harry Kane, who both have seven.
Argentina will face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, Belgium will take on Spain, England are set to face Norway, while France will battle Morocco for a place in the semi-finals.
