The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that there are no plans to increase electricity tariffs, dismissing reports suggesting an impending hike for grid electricity consumers.
In a statement posted on X on Saturday, the Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure in the Office of the Vice President, Sadiq Wanka, said his earlier comments had been misrepresented by sections of the media.
“There is no planned tariff hike for any grid consumer across any service band. The government remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued tariff support,” Wanka stated.
He explained that his remarks, made during a presentation at the Asharami Square 3.0 event in Lagos on July 22, 2026, focused on investment opportunities in Nigeria’s power sector and the Federal Government’s long-term electricity reform agenda.
According to him, the presentation highlighted how ongoing reforms have created new investment opportunities across the power value chain and were not an announcement of any tariff increase.
Wanka also reaffirmed the tariff policy contained in the National Integrated Electricity Policy, which was finalised in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in May 2025.
He noted that the policy provides for a gradual transition to cost-reflective tariffs, a process that has already been implemented for Band A electricity consumers.
The presidential aide stressed that there are no plans to remove subsidies for consumers in other service bands.
Instead, he said the government is exploring more efficient ways to deliver support and ensure consumers receive better value.
Wanka highlighted the Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF), established under the Electricity Act 2023, as a mechanism for providing targeted subsidies directly to vulnerable consumers through electricity accounts or other identity-linked platforms, improving transparency while boosting investor confidence.
He also commended the media for its role in public communication, urging journalists to continue supporting the dissemination of accurate information on government policies.
Wanka added that the President Bola Tinubu administration remains committed to power sector reforms while protecting vulnerable consumers and ensuring a more sustainable and efficient electricity market.
