Veteran Afro-Juju legend, Sir Shina Peters, has revealed the unconventional strategy that helped him rebuild his public image after his controversial exit from Prince Adekunle’s band. Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the “Ace” crooner recalled how his decision to leave the band drew heavy criticism, with many accusing him of betraying his mentor for financial gain. In response to the backlash, his management team devised a daring plan to reshape public perception and restore his reputation.
According to the music icon, his record label and some media executives suggested he act like a mentally unstable person to attract sympathy. “They told me to braid my hair for three days without loosening it, wear torn clothes, and go to Oyingbo Market to buy ewedu while they filmed me,” he recounted. “I didn’t even know what they were up to.” The act was extended to Badagry, where he was filmed behaving like a madman at a Julius Berger construction site, eating in public and putting on a convincing display.
Sir Shina Peters noted that, although the stunt was risky, it proved effective in shifting public opinion. The dramatic performance helped win back the hearts of many fans who had misunderstood his intentions and restored his credibility as a solo artiste. He described the episode as a defining moment in his career, one that turned a wave of criticism into renewed admiration and paved the way for his remarkable comeback.
