Netflix’s acclaimed telenovela, The Polygamist, is set to gain further international recognition as its lead stars, Gugu Gumede and S’Dumo Mtshali, feature on this week’s edition of CNN International’s African Voices, sponsored by leading telecommunications company, Globacom.
The special 30-minute programme, filmed in Johannesburg and hosted by CNN anchor Larry Madowo, shines a spotlight on the careers of the celebrated South African actors while exploring their journeys in the entertainment industry. During the interview, the duo discuss the realities of fame, the challenge of avoiding typecasting, and the need for stronger protection and improved welfare for actors across Africa.
The Polygamist, a 22-episode Netflix drama, tells the compelling story of a family torn apart by a husband’s infidelity, with the consequences drawing them into the complex world of polygamy. The series has earned praise for its emotionally charged storyline, exploring themes of betrayal, deception, trust, and the lasting impact of broken relationships on family life.
Gugu Gumede, who plays Joyce Gomora in the series, is one of South Africa’s most recognisable television actresses. A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, she has also starred as Mandisa in Generations and portrayed the prophetess Mamlambo in Uzalo, South Africa’s highest-rated television programme.
Her co-star, S’Dumo Mtshali, who plays Jonasi Gomora, rose to prominence after winning the SABC1 reality competition Class Act in 2010. He secured his first leading television role the same year in Intersexions and has since built an impressive acting portfolio with appearances in Inside Story (2011), Avenged (2013), Back of the Moon, iNumber Number: Jozi Gold (2023), and The 4 of Us (2025).
Their appearance on African Voices underscores CNN’s continued commitment to showcasing Africa’s creative talent while highlighting the continent’s growing influence in global entertainment.
