Siminalayi Fubara has withdrawn from the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress ahead of Thursday’s exercise, saying the decision was made in the interest of peace, unity and stability in Rivers State.
In a statement personally signed on Wednesday night and titled “My decision to withdraw from the Rivers State gubernatorial primaries,” Fubara said the move followed extensive consultations with his family, friends and associates.
The governor said leadership requires sacrifice and noted that personal ambition must give way to the broader interest of the state.
According to him, Rivers State is bigger than any individual, adding that peace and unity must remain the priority at this critical moment.
Fubara also pledged support for whoever emerges as the APC candidate in the primary election.
He acknowledged that many of his supporters may feel disappointed by the decision, while hinting at facing immense pressure and difficult choices in recent weeks.
The governor thanked the APC leadership for its support and also expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement during the process.
Fubara insisted that his withdrawal should not be seen as weakness, fear or surrender, but as a sacrifice aimed at ensuring peace and unity in Rivers State.
