The Lagos State Government has unveiled two major initiatives aimed at improving traffic governance and restoring environmental order across the metropolis. As part of this move, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced a 24-hour operational framework to ensure continuous traffic management and enforcement across the state.
According to a statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, the new framework is designed to facilitate continuous monitoring, rapid emergency response, and quick clearance of obstructions at all hours. A core part of the initiative includes the creation of a Night Rapid Response Gang, a specialized unit tasked with swiftly handling nighttime traffic incidents, breakdowns, and accidents across major routes in Lagos.
In addition to the 24-hour traffic operations, the government has also conducted a major clearance exercise along Apapa Road, Costain, and Ijora Under Bridge, removing illegal structures and roadside trading activities that had obstructed free vehicular flow. The move, authorities say, reinforces Lagos’s goal of creating a safer, cleaner, and more efficient urban environment.
Commissioned by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, the initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision to maintain uninterrupted movement of people, goods, and services within Nigeria’s economic hub. Giwa noted that the round-the-clock operation reflects the government’s commitment to constant vigilance, efficiency, and discipline in traffic regulation, especially ahead of the festive season when vehicular activity typically surges.
