Fermin Lopez delivered a standout performance as Barcelona maintained their perfect start to the La Liga season with a commanding 5-0 victory over struggling Valencia at Mestalla.
Barcelona needed just five minutes to take the lead when Lamine Yamal raced behind the Valencia defence and calmly converted a perfectly weighted through ball from Lopez.
Lopez then doubled Barcelona’s advantage with a powerful finish into the bottom-left corner after being set up by Anthony Gordon. The goal was Lopez’s fourth of the season, while Gordon registered his fourth assist in as many matches.
Barcelona continued their dominance after the break, with Raphinha making it 3-0 by tapping in his sixth goal of the campaign. Lopez again played a key role, sprinting through the attacking half before setting up the former Leeds winger for his 50th goal in the Spanish top flight.
Pedri added Barcelona’s fourth after combining with Dani Olmo before neatly finding the net. Olmo then turned provider, weaving through the Valencia midfield and releasing Yamal, who scored his second of the match and fourth league goal of the season.
The game also featured second-half debuts for former Premier League players Harvey Elliot and Gabriel Jesus, while Rodri made his first start for Barcelona since completing his £65m move from Manchester City.
The emphatic victory allowed Barcelona to take advantage of Real Madrid’s shock defeat to Real Betis on Friday. Hansi Flick’s side are now three points clear at the top of La Liga, having scored 17 goals in four matches while conceding only two.
For Valencia, the defeat capped another difficult start to the campaign. They have collected just one point and scored only one goal in their opening four matches.
There were also signs of growing frustration among the home supporters, with a section of Valencia fans deliberately delaying their entry before taking their seats in the 19th minute, a symbolic reference to 1919, the year the club was founded.
Barcelona will now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they host Feyenoord on Wednesday. Valencia, meanwhile, travel to Sevilla on Friday.
