Man Utd Crisis Deepens as Carrick Comes Under Fire After Spurs Draw

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is facing growing pressure after his side struggled to make an impact in their 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, extending the club’s disappointing start to the league season and raising fresh questions about their ability to turn things around.

“We couldn’t find a way to get ourselves into the game. With the ball, without the ball, we were off it,” Carrick said after Saturday’s encounter.

United’s performance heightened concerns about their inability to protect leads, exploit numerical advantages and deliver consistent displays. Despite facing several questions after the match, Carrick offered few detailed explanations for the team’s recurring struggles.

Although the manager bears some responsibility, his players have also failed to produce complete performances this season, relying instead on isolated moments of individual brilliance rather than collective organisation.

The situation has left supporters increasingly frustrated, with three separate rounds of boos heard at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Former United captain Gary Neville believes supporters remain committed to the club’s long-term project but warned that their patience is wearing thin.

“I think the fans will stay with the project,” Neville said. “I don’t think the boos are against Michael Carrick for one minute. But what I would say is, they’re turning quite quickly.”

Carrick was appointed to provide stability and direction, drawing on a playing career built around composure and control. However, the current team has struggled to demonstrate those qualities on the pitch.

Midfield Struggles Raise Fresh Concerns

United’s midfield has emerged as one of their biggest weaknesses, despite significant investment in the department during the summer transfer window.

The partnership between Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans has yet to deliver the expected results, while Andrey Santos has struggled to secure regular playing time.

There was renewed optimism surrounding Carlos Baleba following his return to action after an injury-disrupted start to the season. His introduction after an hour lifted the atmosphere inside Old Trafford, with the midfielder producing an encouraging display.

Baleba completed 16 of his 18 passes and created two chances, matching Bruno Fernandes’ total for the entire match.

However, United’s defensive weaknesses extended beyond midfield, as Tottenham repeatedly found space to exploit across the pitch.

The visitors won possession in United’s final third five times during the first half alone, despite five of the home side’s starters having remained at their clubs during the international break.

Tottenham also demonstrated their attacking quality through quick, one-touch passing combinations that enabled them to progress through the thirds with pace and precision.

Savio attempted 10 dribbles, completing five, as he repeatedly challenged United’s defenders and exposed their defensive vulnerability.

United Struggle Against 10 Men Again

Questions have also resurfaced about United’s ability to manage matches after they once again failed to take advantage of a numerical superiority.

Despite Tottenham playing with 10 men for 21 minutes, including stoppage time, United struggled to control the encounter and were unable to secure all three points.

Carrick acknowledged the importance of managing games when ahead but did not provide a clear solution to the recurring problems.

“If we’re ahead in the game, we have to see it out,” he said.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi highlighted the importance of determination in football, saying: “Football is character.”

United must now find a way to improve their performances, restore confidence and address their recurring weaknesses as the Premier League competition intensifies.

Man Utd’s Next Five Fixtures

United face a demanding run of matches, with four of their next five fixtures scheduled away from home, including their next three games.

With pressure mounting and difficult fixtures ahead, Carrick faces a crucial period in which United must demonstrate greater consistency, stronger organisation and the character needed to get their season back on track.
