Nasarawa Amazons have emerged champions of the 2026 Women’s President Federation Cup after defeating Heartland Queens in a dramatic penalty shootout at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
The keenly contested final ended 1-1 after regulation time, with the Lafia-based side fighting back from a goal down in the second half before holding their nerve to win the shootout and lift the coveted trophy.
The victory secured Nasarawa Amazons’ third Women’s President Federation Cup title and marked a memorable redemption after finishing as runners-up in last year’s final.
Speaking after the triumph, team captain Confidence Nwoha credited the success to the players’ determination, unity and the psychological support provided by the coaching crew.
“We thank God for the coach that we have. She is always there to encourage us psychologically. Last year, we lost in the final, and we were determined that this year would be our year,” Nwoha said.
She added that the team never lost belief despite falling behind and remained focused on achieving success throughout the encounter.
Heartland Queens captain Chimebere Opara accepted the defeat in good spirit, describing the officiating as fair while expressing disappointment over missing out on the title.
“I am not happy that we lost, but I know better days lie ahead. I appeal to the Imo State Government to continue to support us and believe in us. Next year, we will do better,” Opara said.
The thrilling final showcased the growing quality and competitiveness of women’s football in Nigeria, with both teams displaying resilience, tactical discipline and determination.
