Ikorodu City returned to winning ways in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a convincing 2-0 victory over Kwara United in their Matchday 8 fixture at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, on Saturday.
The Oga Boys made a flying start, taking the lead just two minutes into the encounter through Salami Farouk, who rose highest to head home from Ujunwa Elijah’s well-delivered throw-in.
The early goal gave the Lagos-based side an immediate advantage and put Kwara United under pressure as the visitors struggled to contain their hosts’ attacking threat.
Ikorodu City continued to press forward and doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Ikechukwu Junior connected with a delivery from Olumide Akinwande to score with another well-placed header.
The goal was Ikechukwu’s third in the league this season, further highlighting his contribution to the team’s attack.
Kwara United returned for the second half hoping to fight their way back into the contest, but the visitors struggled to break down a disciplined Ikorodu City defence.
The hosts remained organised and protected their two-goal advantage, denying the Harmony Boys any opportunity to reduce the deficit.
Kwara United’s difficult afternoon worsened in the 86th minute when Saheed Olaniyi was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge, leaving the visitors with 10 men for the closing stages.
The victory provided an important response for Ikorodu City following their 2-0 defeat to Rivers United on Matchday 7.
The Oga Boys will look to build on the result as they continue their league campaign, while Kwara United will aim to regroup and improve their performance in their next fixture.
