The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned residents across several parts of Nigeria to expect rain and thunderstorms on Monday, September 7, 2026, with possible temporary water accumulation and localised flooding in some areas.
In its daily weather outlook covering the 24-hour period from midnight, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall in parts of Adamawa, Kebbi and Taraba states.
The agency said other parts of the Northern region could also experience thunderstorms and moderate rainfall during the afternoon and evening.
For the Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Kwara states, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with light rainfall in some locations.
According to the agency, rainfall is expected to become moderate across most parts of the Central region later in the day.
Southern States to Experience Light Rainfall
In the South, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions with light rainfall in parts of Ebonyi, Edo, Delta, Abia, Cross River, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa states during the morning.
The agency also predicted light rainfall across parts of the South East, South South and South West during the afternoon and evening.
NiMet Warns of Flooding, Urges Caution
NiMet cautioned that moderate rainfall, particularly across the Northern and Central regions, could lead to temporary water accumulation and localised flooding, especially in low-lying communities and areas with poor drainage.
Residents were advised to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and seek shelter in safe locations. NiMet also recommended disconnecting electrical appliances where necessary to reduce the risk of electrical accidents.
Motorists were urged to exercise caution because rainfall could reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
The agency further advised residents not to drive or walk through flooded roads, warning that floodwaters may pose serious safety risks.
Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet to support safe flight planning and operations.
Residents in affected areas are therefore advised to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as the forecast rainfall and thunderstorms move across the country.
