President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced.
Keyamo disclosed this during the commissioning of the remodelled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport in Kano.
According to the minister, the approval was granted under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as part of efforts to strengthen airport infrastructure and modernise Nigeria’s aviation sector.
He said the runway project would improve operational efficiency and position the Kano airport to compete with other international airports.
“President Bola Tinubu has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,” Keyamo said.
Describing Kano as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria, the minister said the state occupies a strategic position in the country’s economy and aviation industry.
Keyamo also announced that work has commenced on the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj Terminal, with contractors already mobilised to the site.
He explained that the remodelling of the Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal is part of the Federal Government’s broader aviation modernisation programme aimed at improving passenger comfort, operational efficiency, safety and service delivery across airports nationwide.
The minister added that the terminal was named after Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo in recognition of his contributions to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the upgraded terminal reflects the agency’s commitment to providing world-class airport facilities.
She noted that the remodelled terminal would enhance passengers’ travel experience and improve service delivery at the airport.
Also speaking, Chairman of the FAAN Board, Abdullahi Ganduje, commended President Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation for prioritising aviation infrastructure in Kano.
He said the ongoing projects, including the reconstruction of the second runway and the upgrade of the Hajj Terminal, would further strengthen Kano’s position as a major commercial and aviation hub in Northern Nigeria.
