The United States has approved a proposed $1.96 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia to strengthen the kingdom’s air defence capabilities amid rising security tensions across the Middle East.
The approval, announced by the US State Department, is aimed at enhancing Saudi Arabia’s ability to defend its territory against current and emerging threats while reinforcing military cooperation with one of Washington’s key strategic partners in the Gulf.
According to the State Department, the proposed sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by improving the security of a major non-NATO ally and promoting political stability and economic progress in the Gulf region.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a Major non-NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Gulf Region,” the department said.
The arms package includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS), associated warheads and supporting equipment. The precision-guided weapons are designed to accurately engage military targets while minimising unintended damage to civilian infrastructure and non-combatants.
The State Department said the acquisition would significantly enhance Saudi Arabia’s homeland defence by improving its capacity to respond to aerial threats and other security challenges. It added that the deal would strengthen interoperability between Saudi Arabia’s armed forces and those of the United States, as well as other allied forces during joint military operations.
The principal contractor for the proposed sale is expected to be BAE Systems, which will supply the weapons and provide related support services.
The approval comes amid heightened military tensions in the Middle East following renewed hostilities involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement.
Recent reports of missile attacks targeting Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia, alongside strikes on Sanaa International Airport, have intensified concerns over regional security after the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of supporting attacks against them.
Security analysts believe the latest approval reflects Washington’s continued commitment to strengthening the defensive capabilities of its Gulf allies in response to growing missile threats, drone attacks and evolving geopolitical challenges across the region.
Although the State Department has approved the proposed transaction, the sale must still pass through the required US congressional notification process before it is finalised.
US officials stressed that the deal is intended to reinforce Saudi Arabia’s defensive posture rather than alter the military balance in the region, saying stronger air defence systems will help protect critical infrastructure, safeguard civilian populations and support long-term security and stability across the Gulf.
The proposed transaction also underscores the longstanding defence partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia as both countries continue to cooperate on regional security, counterterrorism and military preparedness amid evolving challenges in the Middle East.
