USA Storm Into World Cup Round of 32 as Pochettino’s Men Extend Perfect Start

The United States became the second nation to book a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle.

Just as they did in their emphatic 4-1 win over Paraguay, the Americans made a flying start. An early own goal by Cameron Burgess, who inadvertently turned Folarin Balogun’s pass into his own net, handed the hosts the lead before Alex Freeman sealed the win with a powerful header from Sergino Dest’s deflected effort.

The victory sends the United States into the Round of 32 alongside fellow co-hosts Mexico, capping a flawless start to their World Cup campaign.

Despite the absence of star forward Christian Pulisic, head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his team’s performance and expressed optimism that the captain could return for the next match.

“It’s difficult because we want to have all the players. He’s an important player for us, Christian, but it was impossible today for him to play. We hope that for the next game he will be available. If we want to win the competition, we need the whole team and all the players to be important. Christian is one of the best players in the world, and I hope he can recover as soon as possible,” Pochettino said.

The United States’ perfect start has raised expectations of a deep run in the tournament. For observers who have followed the team throughout Pochettino’s tenure and since the Qatar World Cup, the back-to-back dominant displays have come as a welcome surprise.

With his side playing some of the most confident and effective football seen in recent years, Pochettino appears to have the USMNT peaking at the right time as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
