Erling Haaland fired 10-man Manchester City to a memorable 1-0 victory over Manchester United after Phil Foden was sent off in the first half, handing Enzo Maresca a major statement win and extending City’s perfect start to his reign.
City were reduced to 10 men in the 23rd minute when Foden kicked out at United captain Bruno Fernandes following a challenge, leaving the hosts with more than an hour to play with a numerical disadvantage.
United appeared to have a major opportunity to take control of the derby, but City responded with composure and resilience.
The hosts’ new-look midfield pairing of Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez played a key role as City continued to threaten despite being a man down.
United also had their chances. Marcus Rashford’s free-kick crashed against the post before half-time, while Kobbie Mainoo struck the woodwork again shortly after the restart with a curling effort from distance.
But City delivered the decisive blow on the hour mark.
Haaland adjusted brilliantly to sweep home Josko Gvardiol’s deflected cross and put City ahead.
The goal was subjected to a VAR review, with officials ruling that Haaland was onside and that Fernandez, who attempted to head the ball before it reached the Norwegian, was not interfering with play.
United pushed for an equaliser but struggled to make their numerical advantage count.
City almost doubled their lead when Fernandez’s effort was turned onto the post by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, while Haaland missed another opportunity after getting onto Fernandez’s dangerous low free-kick.
United’s best opportunity came deep into stoppage time when Fernandes’ reverse pass picked out Bryan Mbeumo, but City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced an excellent save to preserve the victory.
The defeat further compounds United’s disappointing start to the Premier League season, leaving them eight points behind Manchester City and defending champions Arsenal.
For City, the result provides an early statement that they remain serious title contenders despite the transition from Pep Guardiola’s trophy-laden decade in charge.
Maresca celebrated wildly at the final whistle after his side held on for an impressive victory despite playing with 10 men for most of the match.
The derby was also played against a tense atmosphere, with United supporters expressing frustration with the club over its handling of ticketing issues.
In the Stretford End, the usual collection of banners and flags was replaced by a single message: “The way you treat us is a disgrace.”
City had initially been the more threatening side before Foden’s dismissal, with Kobbie Mainoo blocking Rayan Cherki’s goalbound effort and Youri Tielemans narrowly avoiding turning Antoine Semenyo’s cross into his own net.
United could not make their extra-man advantage count, and Haaland’s goal ultimately proved enough to settle the derby.
With Arsenal and Manchester City both on 12 points, the two clubs are once again setting the early pace at the top of the Premier League, while Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have already fallen behind.
