The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians and political parties that it will remain neutral and impartial in the 2027 general elections, insisting that it has no candidate and favours no political platform.
INEC Chairman, Professor Josiah Amupitan, gave the assurance on Tuesday at the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Amupitan said the commission had no interest in who wins or loses any election, stressing that INEC’s responsibility was to provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
“INEC has no interest in who wins or loses any election. The commission does not have a candidate, nor does it favour any political platform,” he said.
He urged political parties and candidates to make issues, policies and practical solutions the focus of their 2027 campaigns rather than turning the election into a contest of violence, insults and personal attacks.
“Let the 2027 election campaign be a marketplace of ideas, not a theatre of war,” Amupitan said.
The INEC chairman said Nigerians were more interested in practical solutions to their challenges and deserved clear, concrete and measurable programmes from political candidates.
“Nigerians do not want insults; they want solutions. They deserve to hear clear, concrete, and measurable manifestos,” he said.
Amupitan also assured Nigerians that INEC’s preparations for the 2027 elections were progressing, with the commission expanding its logistics and operational capacity to manage the large workforce required for the nationwide exercise.
“I am pleased to report that our preparations for the 2027 elections are progressing with absolute precision. We are scaling our operational logistics to manage a massive nationwide ad hoc workforce of 1.4 million personnel across over 176,000 polling units,” he said.
The assurance comes as political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with the conduct of a peaceful, credible and transparent poll remaining a major concern among Nigerians.
