Former Kano State Governor and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has confirmed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement to serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027.
Kwankwaso disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television, saying the agreement provides that the presidency will return to the North after Obi’s single four-year tenure.
Expressing confidence in Obi’s commitment to the agreement, Kwankwaso said he had no reason to doubt that the former Anambra State governor would honour the pact.
“Oh yes, I personally believe him and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will change his mind when the time comes, and we are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” he said.
The former Kano governor said the agreement was documented both between the two of them and separately with the party.
“We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he stated.
Explaining the terms of the agreement, Kwankwaso said both leaders agreed to work together to ensure that after the 2027–2031 administration, power would return to the North.
“The agreement is that after four years we will work together, team together as a group, as a party, as friends, brothers and so on, so that after his term, or our term, from 2027 to 2031, the presidency returns to the North. That is the general agreement,” he said.
On why he accepted the vice-presidential slot after previously pursuing the presidency, Kwankwaso said the current political situation supports a four-year southern presidency before power shifts back to the North.
He added that such an arrangement would promote national unity and strengthen the country’s political balance.
“Together we felt that the presidency should go to the South for four years; thereafter it will come back to the North.
“We believe that should be the consensus of everybody in this country, so we can move together as a family, both North and South,” he said.
