Six opposition political parties have proposed the establishment of a “government of national competence” that would operate for a single four-year transition term if they secure victory in the 2027 general election.
The proposal was unveiled on Monday at an opposition political parties summit organised by G100 in Abuja, where representatives of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) discussed a framework for greater cooperation ahead of the election.
Presenting the proposal at the summit, Salihu Lukman, former vice-chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the proposed government would be built around four principles: competence, integrity, national inclusion and fair representation.
The coalition also proposed an enforceable transition charter that would require participating parties to abide by agreed terms throughout the proposed four-year administration.
Under the framework, the coalition would establish a central leadership committee, a publicity and communication committee and a legal committee to coordinate its activities.
It also plans to create working groups focusing on democratic renewal, the single-term transition charter, national reforms, opposition unity and the selection of a common presidential candidate.
However, Lukman stressed that the initiative is not seeking the dissolution of any political party or asking candidates to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.
He said the immediate priority is to create a framework for cooperation among the opposition parties before discussions on leadership arrangements and the choice of candidates.
According to Lukman, G100 is facilitating the process without endorsing any political party or individual candidate.
He said the broader objective is to give Nigerians a credible alternative government in the 2027 elections.
The proposal comes as opposition parties continue to explore ways of overcoming political divisions and presenting a stronger challenge ahead of the 2027 general election.
For the coalition, the focus is not simply on forming another political alliance, but on creating a common platform based on competence, integrity, inclusion and national reform.
