ECOWAS Denounces Attempted Military Coup in Benin

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the reported attempted military takeover in Benin, calling it “an unconstitutional move” and “a subversion of the will of the people.” In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the Commission expressed alarm over the news, warning that the action poses a serious threat to the country’s democratic stability.

“ECOWAS strongly condemns this unconstitutional move that represents a subversion of the will of the people of Benin,” the regional bloc said.

The Commission called for strict adherence to Benin’s constitutional order, while commending the country’s authorities for swiftly containing the situation.

“ECOWAS calls for the full respect of the Constitution of Benin and salutes the efforts of the Government and the Republican Army in bringing the situation under control,” it said.

The bloc also warned those behind the plot that they would be held accountable for the consequences of their actions.

“ECOWAS holds the leaders of the plot both individually and collectively responsible for any loss to life and property occasioned by their action,” the statement read.

ECOWAS pledged its full support to Benin, including the potential deployment of its regional standby force if needed. “ECOWAS will assist the government and the people in every necessary way, including deploying the regional standby force, to uphold the Constitution and protect the territorial integrity of Benin,” the statement said.
